Founded by Jim Canton in 1984, Freshwater News has been your source for “all the news that floats” for three successful decades. Current owner and publisher Jolene Coats-Walsh came to the paper in 1999, and bought the business in 2011.

Serving the boating, fishing and waterfront living community, Freshwater News is both a thriving publication and a labor of love. “I truly love my work in the boating community,” says Coats-Walsh, “both paid and volunteer, We will continue to share our love of our rivers, lakes, and ocean and the many types of watercraft we own and use.”

Coats-Walsh serves as public liaison of the Columbia River Yachting Association, Coats-Walsh mission is to promote awareness of the association in the media and with the public. She is also member of the Maritime Heritage Coalition, NW Steelheaders Assn. and Northwest Sportfishing Industry Assn. One of her major goals is to grow a new generation of boaters.

“These volunteer positions mean a lot to me,” Coats-Walsh says. “I am especially enthusiastic about being a partner and board member of the Maritime Heritage Coalition. The huge success of our festival in the St. Helens location has energized all of us to promote and preserve the maritime heritage by establishing a permanent center to provide continuing opportunities for education, exploration and discovery.”
